At the risk of stating the obvious, ‘You are in business because you want to do business’. You’ve put a lot of effort into developing products and services that people want, and you want to get on with delivering them.

You know your stuff. The business is going well, but you have contingency plans in place, just in case. The last thing you need now is to get caught up in disputes – with suppliers, staff, customers, creditors, debtors or your partners. But disputes happen. In fact, conflict and disputes are inherent to doing business. Disputes carry high emotion. You may see each other as unreasonable, perhaps dishonest or unscrupulous. You might feel angry and let down that the other party doesn’t seem to care that years of hard work are about to go up in smoke. That’s when you need to remind yourself that ‘You are in business because you want to do business’.

When you have a dispute, you have a problem. You need to sort it out – quickly - and get back to business. Try to be objective, try to see things from the other person’s perspective (very difficult to do in the middle of a dispute) and examine your options. Remember, while obtaining legal advice is fundamental, especially to understand your legal rights and obligations, you need to keep control of the options.
